Inclusion of students with disabilities in the state network schools: a study on accessibility and structural adaptations

Abstract

It is estimated that there are in Brazil about six million children and young people with special educational needs , to an official quota of enrollment around 500 thousand students , considering the number of enrollments in all kinds of resources available , from special schools to schools and regular classes.Vast majority of students with special educational needs is today out of any type of school, which sets much more widespread exclusion from school, despite the previous rhetoric of integration and / or recent school inclusion proposal.The study aimed to investigate the accessibility and structural adjustments in 14 state schools in a mining town and to identify the prevalence of students with disabilities. Descriptive study using a questionnaire and photographic record. Of the total enrolled students, 111 have some type of disability , with prevalence in males, mean age 13.84 ± 5.19 , where 65.77 % with mental disabilities. With regard to structural adjustments, 92.86 % have ramps at the entrances of schools, 50 % toilet fitted with safety bars and access with handrails, non-slip floor 28.57%, 21.43% and furniture adapted ramps at the entrance of the rooms of class. Only 14.29% contained with ideal height of the sink and soap dish in none wasfound bathrooms with tilted mirrors. It follows undoubtedly that there is need to improve the accessibility conditions in the educational network. It is necessary implementation of adaptation measures in order to become increasingly present inclusion and accessibility to people with special needs.
