Towards a pedagogy of egoism or the limitations of the concept of compassion in Arthur Schopenhauer's practical philosophy

The aim of this paper is based on a detailed reading and analysis of Schopenhauer's works - in particular, the third edition of The World as Will and Representation (Die Welt als Wille und Vorstelung) of 1844, On the Foundations of Morals (Über die Grundlage der Moral) of 1840, Parerga und Paralipomena (Parerga and Paralipomena) of 1851, and the author's lecture notes on ethics, The Metaphysics of Vice (Metaphisyk der Sitten) of 1820, to evaluate the importance of the concepts of egoism (Egoismus) and compassion (Mitleid) for life in society. We hope to explain the importance and impact of the concepts of egoism and compassion in the author's philosophy, as well as, on the one hand, to argue and defend the hypothesis that the first concept, used as a foundation for a pedagogy of egoism, would provide a more adequate basis for dealing with social, political, and legal issues - a reduction of the damage of existence - and, on the other hand, to verify the limitations of the concept of compassion for the same cases and, perhaps, its inflated value.
