Abstract

Arthur Schopenhauer's influence on Swami Vivekananda's moral doctrine has been a topic of academic study and debate. Paul Hacker has argued that Vivekananda was influenced by Schopenhauer's "mistaken" interpretation of the Sanskrit formula tat tvam asi (that thou art), originally devoid of moral connotation. Hacker argued that tat tvam asi ethics became a crucial element in "neo-Hindu" thought, mobilizing India to introduce a moral engagement in the tradition. In this article, we will explore Schopenhauer's influence on the emergence of "neo-Hinduism" and how this influence continues to be a subject of ongoing analysis. The impact of Schopenhauer on Vivekananda's moral precepts remains a matter of debate, with no definitive consensus on the extent of his influence.
