Abstract

The used terms in Portuguese and Spanish language to name education through art appreciation, critical analysis and artistic production are conflicting and extremely ambiguous, leading to narrow interpretations of its educational field. I propose that we should not use terms such as ‘artistic education’ which is usually connoted with artistic training or instruction or the translation of the English term ‘art education’ which is terribly ambiguous. My hypothesis is that following the common umbrella of the concept of Cultural Education we could dismiss nine century assumptions about art and closely relate our theories and practices to the field of cultural studies and I ask if the term Education of Visual Culture might be more consensual and appropriate to our societies.
