How we became teachers: Continuities and transformations in the teaching profession

This text, How we become teachers, analyzes the continuities and metamorphoses of the teaching profession in a time of profound transformations in education and schools. Beginning with the image of teachers as targets or as centers, it unfolds in ten fragments addressing the following themes: 1) initial teacher education; 2) the transition phase between teacher education and the profession; 3) teachers’ pedagogical signature; 4) teacher collaboration; 5) teachers’ professional knowledge; 6) teachers’ auctoritas; 7) teaching as creation; 8) teachers’ humanity; 9) the courage of freedom; 10) the metamorphoses of the teaching profession. The epilogue emphasizes teachers’ responsibility for their own profession.
