The Laboratório de Ensino de Química (LAEQUI) is a research group in the area Teaching Chemistry of UFSM. One of the main objectives of the group is contribute to improvements in education in Chemistry in basic and higher levels. In this work a brief theoretical foundation on the use of the thematic in teaching is presented as well as some research developed by LAEQUI. Yet are discussed the implications of research on learning of high school students and methodological approaches used, addition of group contributions to the area of Teaching Chemistry. At the end of this article some considerations are made about the thematic approach in chemical education, warning to need to move towards a more problem contextualization and consistent with your true feeling.
