This work is based on Philology and Paleography to carry out a comparative study between the old and the current Brazilian Portuguese. To achieve this aim, four manuscript documents were analyzed, all written in Rio Grande do Sul and stored in the Municipal Historical Archive of Santa Maria. The first was written in 1904, while the other three in 1910. Based on the fac-similar editions - photos taken from the archives of the Historical Archives of Santa Maria - and the diplomatic editions - transcriptions made according to the norms of Cambraia (2005 ) - from each manuscript, paleographic comments on the vowel system (vowel substitutions), the consonantal system (improper consonant meetings, double consonants, consonant substitutions), the use of diacritics (mainly accentuation), undue hypersegmentation and hypersegmentation), the use of capital letters and the use of abbreviations. The main distinction found was regarding the rules of use of the accentuation signs.Downloads
