In the third book of The World as Will and Representation, Schopenhauer develops his considerations on aesthetics, presents the concepts of beauty and the sublime, describes the visual and poetic arts, and characterizes music as distinct from all other fine arts. This book would have impressed the young Nietzsche, especially the conception of music as the fundamental work of art, and this common inspiration in Schopenhauerian aesthetics is one of the themes of his dialogue with Wagner. The objective of this paper is to follow this book to understand the formulation of Schopenhauer's metaphysics of music and briefly present a little of the reception of this metaphysics in Wagner's writing on Beethoven and in Nietzsche's early work.
