This article aims to discuss how the training of undergraduate university students specializing in elementary school occurs in relation to the teaching of visual arts. It was taken into account their performance in supervised pre-service teacher internships, raising discussions about the current training as well as actions of the future professionals of the Pedagogy Course - CE/UFSM. Thus, qualitative, descriptive and interpretative critical approaches under a dialect perspective were used as we understand the importance of the totality of the phenomenon in the study and its contradictions. The data was collected through documental analysis, observations, field notes, interviews with students of Pedagogy and professors graduated in visual arts. This investigation shows gaps and positive aspects regarding the teaching of visual arts. For this reason, the training of elementary school university students needs to be reflected on as well as expanded in relation to knowledge, specially the teaching knowledge of visual arts. Similarly, the study indicates the need for attention to both pedagogical and syllabus knowledge. Moreover, the teaching of arts in the Pedagogy Course does not establish a practice-theory between what is taught and its relation with the reality of school knowledge. The students still bring along stereotypes as well as models of how to teach and how to be an arts teacher based on their school background and experiences in arts.Downloads
