Production and evaluation of health education videos with translation into brazilian sign language

The shortage of teaching material on themes linked to health education impairs the promotion of strategies to prevent/combat diseases among deaf people. The production of educational videos is a good strategy to address this problem. Therefore, we produced and evaluated videos with narration in Brazilian sign language (Libras). After selecting the content, the messages were translated into Libras, the silent narrator was filmed and the layout was completed with animated and live passages. All the filming, animated creation and editing were done with PowToon®, Windows Movie Make® and Camtasia Studio® 8.6. Two videos were produced, one on dengue fever and the other on tuberculosis. Seven deaf students and seven interpreters from state and municipal public schools in the city of Maranguape, Ceará, Brazil, evaluated the videos through questionnaires. The responses showed that the interpreters recognized the benefits of using videos as teaching tools, and were displeased with the lack of suitable materials of this type for their teaching practices. But they all agreed with the efficiency of the videos produced. The deaf students affirmed that the videos were stimulating and positively accepted their use as learning tools, and expressed their motivation to give their opinions and contribute to the study, stressing the importance of promoting efforts to strengthen the culture and identity of deaf people. We hope this work encourages other studies to improve the technological resources and production of materials accessible to deaf people, looking to new applications in other areas.
