Abstract

In this paper, the analysis of aspects of the wider context as well as of the lexicogrammar of the sentence of Isabella Nardoni’s case is presented. In order to do so, the notion of context of situation, according to Halliday e Hasan (1989), is adopted in association with the expanded notion of context of culture as proposed by Meurer (2004) in terms of social practices, role and social structure prescriptions as rules and resources. The lexicogrammar of the text that instantiates the genre “criminal sentence” is analyzed specially from aspects of the transitivity system described in Halliday and Matthiessen (2004). In relation to the prescriptions of social roles, the way lexicogrammar choices represent the agency of participants was verified. The analysis has also shown a high degree of intercontextuality of the sentence, since it involves actions instantiated in different social domains.
