The objective of this study is to (i) analyze the recommendation of the need for irrigation for soybean crops using the methodology of calculating the water balance measured by monitoring soil moisture by the TDR sensor, (ii) verify the impacts of irrigation on soybean productivity and water use efficiency, and (iii) compare this irrigation recommendation with those generated by the calculation and simulation of the water balance following the FAO methodology - without using the soil moisture parameters observed by the TDR, for the 2022/2023 harvest in Cachoeira do Sul/RS. Thus, the study was divided into a field stage and a simulation/calculation stage. The water supplementation of 295.6 mm via irrigation contributed to the increase in all productivity components and in the final soybean productivity, which was 4,370.8 kg ha-1 (irrigated) and 2,473.6 kg ha-1 (rainfed). On the other hand, water use efficiency was higher in conditions of lower water availability of 16.4 kg mm-1 (rainfed) and 9.8 kg mm-1 (irrigated). The calculation and simulation of the water balance performed from data obtained in the field, using the methodology of FAO bulletin – 56, recommended a higher number of irrigations, totaling a higher accumulated depth for the cycle of 420.0 mm (calculated) and 405.0 mm (simulated Cropwat), highlighting the importance of monitoring soil moisture in methodologies for recommending the need for irrigation.
