Abstract

With this essay we intend to present the lay foundation of morality by Arthur Schopenhauer, showing how Schopenhauerian moral discourse is articulated and describing the two conditions indicated by the philosopher to reach the negation of the will to live: the ascetic-contemplative genius, reserved to a select few, and that of compassion, open to most men. The predisposition to compassion is individual and innate, like the character from which it originates. However, pitying, where there is a natural inclination remained in potentia, can also be aroused by the experience of one's pain, through a "second and better navigation", the schopenhauerian deuteros plous.
