Abstract

As far as Language Studies is concerned, there has been an increasing interest in the study of the desirable competences of a language teacher/professor (Consolo; Teixeira da Silva, 2007; Klaus, 2005; Basso, 2001; Teixeira da Silva, 2000; Alvarenga, 1999; Almeida Filho, 1999; among others). It has equally been subject of research work the concept of discourse genres (Bakhtin, 1953) related to the process of language teaching and learning (Rojo, 2005). This article aims to discuss the importance of the development of certain competences so that the language professional can effectively play his/her role as an educator and foreign language teacher/professor. The focus of the present work is also to build a link between the building of competences in the Teacher Education area and the theory of genres. The theoretical background is based upon the concept of competence by Hymes (1972), Canale; Swain (1980), Canale (1982), Bachman (1990), Celce-Murcia, (1995) and Almeida Filho (1993) as well as upon a discursive approach to language (Bakhtin, 1929) and the concept of discursive genre (Bahktin, 1953).
