Abstract

This study examines the development and consolidation of judo in the Northern Coast of Rio Grande do Sul between 1960 and 2010, based on the memories of senseis Joel Luiz Guarilha and Paulo Roberto da Silva Guimarães. Using Oral History as a qualitative methodology, the research reconstructs the dissemination of the sport in the region through the interviewees' narratives. Joel Guarilha pioneered judo practice and teaching in Tramandaí in the late 1960s, albeit intermittently. Paulo Guimarães, in turn, founded the JudoMar school in the late 1990s, structuring the sport and training new athletes and instructors. The accounts reveal that judo in the region developed in a non-linear manner, shaped by the personal trajectories of the masters, while also serving as a means of social mobility and educational formation for practitioners. The study reaffirms the importance of Oral History in preserving often marginalized sports memories and concludes that the continuity of judo in the Northern Coast stems from the dedication and resilience of these masters.
