Movement and language of the bourgeois body culture

The present review aims to analyze the work Bourgeois body culture: history and pedagogical systematizations, authored by Prof. Pierre Normando Gomes-da-Silva. The book deals with how gymnastics became the education of the body, a component of the code of conduct fabricated by the bourgeois civilizing process, which demanded standardized and self-disciplined behavior from individuals, according to the parameters of usefulness, productive efficiency, moderation of emotions, and softening of passions. It is a deep rereading of the origins of bourgeois body behavior, through the history of the pedagogical systematization of gymnastics in Europe and Brazil. At the same time, it initiates the first steps towards an understanding of movement as a language phenomenon, which would culminate, a posteriori, in the emergence of the Pedagogy of Corporality.
