Geographical analysis of river dynamics in Vila Urlândia, municipality of Santa Maria/RS

Abstract

The study area is located in Vila Urlândia and the western part of Vila Santos, in the southern administrative region of the city of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. The studies aim to map and zone the risk of river processes that could cause harm to the population. Community participation through reports of hydrological events and riverbank erosion, photographic and video recordings, information on recurrences, and other associated problems was crucial in defining the risk of river processes. The area was mapped using an orthomosaic of the village, using aerial photographs taken with a Mavic Air 2 drone, from an aerial survey at an altitude of 150 meters. The risk level is determined by the relationship matrix between the degree of hazard and vulnerability. The data presented show that, in the urban community studied, hydrological processes of flooding and flash floods are predominant, but the possibility of home destruction is more associated with the geological processes of erosion and riverbank undermining. A total of 211 homes were identified as being at high and very high risk. Identifying and analyzing risk areas is essential for adopting measures to minimize or prevent damage and/or loss of life.

Luís Eduardo de Souza Robaina, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

He holds a degree in Geology from the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (1984), a master's degree in Geosciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1990), a PhD in Geosciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1999), and post-doctorate degrees from the University of Porto, Portugal, and the University of Maine, Le Mans, France. He is currently a professor/collaborating researcher in the postgraduate program in geography at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and a full professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria, in the geography program and the postgraduate program in geography and geosciences. He coordinates the CNPq LAGEOLAM research group, organized in 1995. He has experience in geosciences, with an emphasis on geomorphological, geoenvironmental, and natural disaster studies.

Romário Trentin, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

He holds a degree in Geography from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2004), a Master's degree in Geography from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2007), and a PhD in Geography from the Federal University of Paraná (2011). He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria. He has experience in Geosciences, with an emphasis on Geotechnologies, working mainly on the following topics: Hydrographic Basin, Sandblasting, Geomorphology, Land Use and Occupation, Geoenvironmental Characterization, and Risk Areas.

Andrea Valli Nummer, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

She holds a degree in Geology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1987), a master's degree in Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1996), and a PhD in Civil Engineering (Geotechnics) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2003). She holds a postdoctoral degree from the Faculty of Arts - University of Porto, Portugal (2022). She is currently a Full Professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria. She has experience in Geosciences, with an emphasis on Engineering and Environmental Geology, working mainly on the following topics: erosion, mass movements, environmental geology, and geomorphology.

Rinaldo Jose Barbosa Pinheiro, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

Civil Engineer, with a Master's degree in Structures (1991) and a PhD in Geotechnics (2000) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGEC/UFRGS). Full Professor at the Technology Center of the Federal University of Santa Maria (CT/UFSM) and responsible for the Geotechnics Sector of the Civil Construction Materials Laboratory (LMCC). Professor of the undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering and Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, responsible for the disciplines of Soil Mechanics and Earthworks. Permanent Professor of the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering (PPGEC) and responsible for the disciplines of Soils, Aggregates and Stabilized Mixtures for Paving and Environmental Geotechnics. He coordinated the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering from 2005 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2017. President of the RS Nucleus of ABMS in the 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 biennia. CNPq Productivity and Research Scholarship from 2016-2021. Has experience in Civil Engineering and Engineering Geology, with emphasis on Geotechnics and Environment, working mainly on the following topics: geological-geotechnical characterization, environmental geotechnics and paving.

Juliane dos Santos Pinto, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

Graduated in Civil Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2002); Master in Civil Engineering area: civil construction and environmental preservation, from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2005). Assistant Professor at the Franciscan University from 2009 to 2023, in the courses of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism, Materials Engineering and Civil Engineering. Substitute professor at the Federal University of Santa Maria - UFSM from 2021 to 2023. Doctoral student in the Postgraduate Program in Civil Engineering - Federal University of Santa Maria. Start: 1st Semester / 2018. Research line: Geotechnics and Paving. Developing projects in the area of ​​​​Geoprocessing and Geotechnical Mapping.

Antonio Von Ende Dotto, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

Geographer graduated from the Federal University of Santa Maria (2022) and holds a degree in Geography from Faculdade Única (2023). He holds a Master's degree in Geography from the Graduate Program in Geography at UFSM and is currently a doctoral candidate at the same institution. Member of the Environmental Geology Laboratory (UFSM), where he develops work with geotechnological applications in the areas of hydrological modeling, geomorphology, and erosion processes.

Marco Antônio da Rosa Soares, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria

He is currently a master's student in the Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). He holds a bachelor's degree in Geography from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). He is a member of the CNPq Environmental Geology Laboratory (LAGEOLAM) research group. He has experience in Geosciences, with an emphasis on Geotechnologies and process automation using Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence techniques.

Maria Giovanna Torquato Faustino, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria
