The article addresses participation in supplemental courses and spending on these courses, based on data from the 2017-2018 POF. Starting from the literature on shadow education and engaging with elements of Pierre Bourdieu's work, it offers reflections on the increase in participation in supplemental courses and the inequalities associated with this phenomenon. It relies on descriptive analysis and regression analysis to understand the differences in participation in these courses within the Brazilian context. Among other findings, it highlights that relatively high average expenses consume a relatively small portion of the income of wealthier families compared to poorer families, and that household income and the years of education of the household reference person affect participation in different courses in various ways. In this regard, it can be said that supplemental education practices vary according to the composition of individuals' capital (economic and cultural), with economic capital being relevant for attendance in language courses and cultural capital for attendance in music courses.
