Abstract

William Shakespeare’s narrative poem The Rape of Lucrece depicts a rape and its consequences. This article sets out to explore its sexual content with the aim of establishing its erotic and possibly pornographic character, while problematizing the concepts involved. The poem is also associated to the context of erotic writing in Early Modern England, by presenting and commenting upon works by authors like Christopher Marlowe, John Marston, John Donne and Thomas Nashe.
