Controversy in debates: prosody of irony in political speech

In political debates, irony works as a discursive strategy that can challenge the credibility of candidates. More than “what is said”, it is important to consider here “how it was said”. Thus, this paper aims to show that prosody is a linguistic element that is part of argumentation. To do this, we investigate F0 behaviors and duration in the expression of irony in political debates, in controversial moments of attack to and disqualification of the opponent. The results showed that there are adjustments in the prosodic parameters during the attitudinal expression that act as clues in the recognition of irony.Downloads
