Developing academic oral skills using the video pitch as a learning strategy

Resumo

This research reports on the success of an online oral task developed for English for Academic Purposes learners in a Brazilian university context, which required recording and submitting a short video pitch about the students’ own research. We discuss the contributions the task brought to improving oral academic skills, focusing on the videos and comments posted in the online forum, and the students’ self-evaluations. Our results indicate that issues such as identity, agency, and autonomy play an important role in the teaching and learning of EAP and deserve attention when designing materials for students in this specific context.

Bárbara Malveira Orfanò, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Possui graduação em Letras pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2000) e doutorado em Linguística Aplicada - Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick (2010). Atualmente é professora adjunta da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e faz parte do corpo docente do Programa de pós graduação em Estudos Linguísticos: linha de pesquisa intitulada ensino /aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras . Participa como orientadora do curso de pós graduação em Línguística Aplicada do Mary Immaculate College-Irlanda (modalidade online). Coordena o Núcleo de Estudos de Línguas para Fins Acadêmicos da UFMG e tem experiência na área de Linguística, com ênfase em Linguística Aplicada, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Linguística de Corpus,Corpora de Aprendizes, Discurso Acadêmico Oral e Escrito da Língua Inglesa , Ensino e Aprendizagem de Língua Inglesa com Foco no Contexto Acadêmico e na formação de professores de Língua Inglesa. Desde 2018 é diretora do Instituto Confúcio da UFMG e coordena o Centro de Estudos da Ásia Orienta

Doutoranda e Mestra em Linguística Aplicada pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Fez mestrado em English Language Teaching na Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Faz pesquisa em Linguística Aplicada Crítica, concentrando-se em ensino crítico de inglês e de português como línguas adicionais e em práticas de letramento acadêmico, especificamente escrita acadêmica. Também se interessa por interculturalidade crítica e letramento digital. É membro dos seguintes grupos/núcleos de pesquisa: IndisciPLAr: Português como Língua Adicional em uma perspectiva indisciplinar, da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) e NALET: Núcleo de Aprendizagem e Ensino Tecnológico, do Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG), certificados pelo CNPq. Também participa do grupo de pesuisa Educação e Aprendizagem de Línguas Estrangeiras e do NELFA: Núcleo de Estudos de Línguas para Fins Acadêmicos, ambos na UFMG. Atua como professora das disciplinas de Inglês para Fins Acadêmicos (IFA), na Faculdade de Letras (UFMG), desde 2018, e como professora EBTT temporária no CEFET-MG, na área de língua inglesa. Tem mais de 20 anos de experiência em ensino de línguas e em tradução.
