Cinema as a non-conventional teaching resource: an analysis based on Geography textbooks

This research aimed to analyze a Geography textbook collection for the final years of Middle School, focusing on cinema and its contributions to the learning process. The methodology adopted consisted of a qualitative approach with a descriptive and documentary character, utilizing Content Analysis procedures. The discussion of the results was based on a bibliographic survey of scientific articles, dissertations, and books on the subject. The findings indicated a significant presence of films and documentaries in the analyzed collection, evidencing a potential alternative for articulating themes and content. However, gaps were identified in how these materials are presented, which may discourage and/or hinder the organization of Geography lessons. Consequently, the discussions fostered the understanding that, to be effectively utilized and to achieve the development of geographical thinking, cinema requires adequate planning. This reaffirms the importance of teachers having a profound knowledge of the technical and artistic specificities of the films and/or documentaries they intend to work with.
