The aim of the article is to question optimism regarding the desire for transformation to something better in the post-pandemic context. On the one hand, if it is natural that we desire some transformation after experiencing the scourge of the pandemic – responses to the sense of suffering as another unfolding of ascetic ideals, as Nietzsche wrote –, on the other hand, the yearning for transformation finds a limit both in the sense of the challenge of transformation – an obstacle for itself – and by optimism in the enlightened theses that overestimate individuals and their cognitive potentials and underestimate the potential of internal conflicts. I conclude with a brief indication of the urgency of a genealogical program of Brazilian culture.
