Militarization of Education in Brazil: an ideological trajectory from 1871 to 1985

This article is the result of a study that investigated the relationship between education and militarism in Brazil, tracing the path of military ideologies in educational policies since the monarchical government of Dom Pedro II (1871), until the end of the Military Dictatorship (1985). To that end, a comparison is made with research from different areas of knowledge, such as Educational Policy, History of Education, Political Science and Social Sciences, building a historical review of the relationship between education and militarism in the country. Through the rhetoric of image (Barthes, 1990) and the Bakhtinian philosophy of language, it investigates different verbal and image statements, and understands that the phenomenon of militarization of public education is not contemporary, nor solely a product of the Military Regime, but intrinsically related to the ideological struggle that permeates the creation of the Brazilian school. Finally, it reveals how the Armed Forces and their ideologies exerted a centripetal force, promoting and naturalizing military intervention in educational policy, especially in the Ministry of Education.
