Abstract

This article aims to analyze the understanding of extension agents on the effects and challenges of providing rural extension services in the Sanga and Muembe districts in the Niassa province in Mozambique. A questionnaire covered 30 extension agents between January and June 2020 and the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage table) with the help of the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). The results show that the extension workers who work in the districts of Sanga and Muembe are generally young, and trained mostly in Agricultural Science schools. They usually mentor family farmers, in groups or individually, predominantly using the Training and Visit approach. The extension agents face several challenges, among them: the insufficiency of material and financial resources to carry out their activities, the lack of adequate training, and the low participation of farmers in the planning and research actions developed. The study suggests that extension agents might be trained in a participatory approach toward sustainable development.
