Abstract

The objective of this work is the analysis of the fishermen theUruguay River,in Pirapó and Roque Gonzales counties located in the stateof Rio Grande do Sul. Fifty-five fishermen were interviewed in the two counties in an effort to trace a preliminary profile of the fishing activity, toindicate any relationships between fishing activity and environmental issuesand to discuss the relationship between fishing activity and other economicactivity carried out by the fishermen on a smaller scale. Seventy tree percent (73%) of those interviewed combine fishing activity with otheragricultural activities and 16% have fishing as their only economic activity. Most of those interviewed were worried about the environmentalpreservation issue. These two aspects reveal strategies and problems thatthe small-scale fishermen encounter in the attempt to maintain theiractivities.
