This paper reflects upon the importance of the professional training of the journalist in the expansion and consolidation of the democratic citizenship, in Brazil. It takes into consideration the fact that when universities accept such responsibility they also accept the challenge of dealing with the transition between the traditional way of carrying out journalistic activities and the new approach to journalism, characterized by current digital technology. Upon such consideration, this paper presents argumentation concerning three realities: a) that of the means, which allow for a historical consideration of technology; b) that of the institutions, which enable the perception of the political context in which such practice takes place; and c) that of values which, unlike one would expect, possibilities of making the means very real in the life of a given society.
