Abstract

The General Language Course (CLG), a compilation organized by the linguists Albert Sechehaye and Charles Bailly, can be considered the founding work of Linguistics despite the criticisms and concordances that it has received since the publication of the first edition in 1916. In this article, from a a work inscribed in the field of Language Studies and developed in the Graduate Program of the Federal University of Santa Maria, we propose a dialogue between the perspectives of Ferdinand de Saussure and MAK Halliday. Our objective is to verify how the concept of "system" is conceived in the Saussurian and Hallidian perspectives to investigate the extent to which these perspectives approach and / or distance themselves, since this concept is relevant in both. The perspectives seem to come close to (a) the role of lexical-grammatical choices in the construction of meaning, (b) language as a system of language, and (c) the notion of synchrony versus diachrony.
