The purpose of this essay is to analyze the novel Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee, by Thomas Brussig, and the film Goodbye, Lenin!, by Wolfgang Becker (both works considered by critics as ostalgic - nostalgic for the past in the GDR) under a Bakhtinian optics. In his studies on Rabelais, Bakhtin defines the characteristics of the phenomenon of the carnivalization of literature and laughter, and from this phenomenon we will point out some of its characteristics in ostalgic works.
