Abstract

To investigate and relate individual health status, fatigue, handgrip strength, and life expectancy with COPD. This is an observational, prospective and cross-sectional study carried out in the pulmonary rehabilitation unit of a University Hospital. The research sample consisted of patients with COPD, of both genders, who were evaluated in relation to psychosocial aspects, diagnoses, body composition, health status using the COPD Assessment Test - CAT questionnaire, fatigue scale using the FACIT-T Fatigue Scale, strength of handgrip and the age-corrected Charlson Comorbidity Index - ICC-I was used to determine survival. There was a significant relationship of the impact of the disease on health status with fatigue (r=0.743 p=0.014), as well as with handgrip strength (r= -0.744 p = 0.034) and with the Charlson comorbidity index (r= -0.782 p= 0.008). CAT scores were associated with fatigue, handgrip strength and Charlson comorbidity index. Therefore, our results suggest that the severe impact on the health of individuals with COPD, as measured by the CAT, is associated with limitations in strength, fatigue and estimated life.
