Approximations between freirian thought and freudian psychoanalysis in theses and dissertations

Abstract

The present study is an integrative review that examined the production of theses and dissertations on the intersection between Paulo Freire's pedagogical thought and Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis, constituting part of a doctoral thesis of the same scope, but more comprehensive, developed by the first author and supervised by the second. The research was conducted in the first semester of 2023 using the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) with the descriptors “Freire,” “Freud,” and “psychoanalysis.” Among the documents found, three Brazilian works and two American theses cataloged in the same database were selected. The analysis revealed points of convergence between the authors: the relationship between the sadism/masochism pair in the processes of colonization of minds and spirits described by Freire; the relevance of the psychoanalytic concept of “transference” in the teacher-student relationship; and the importance and desirability of emotions and the desire for knowledge in affective and engaged learning. The research highlights a resonance between Freire's writings and concepts, mainly those contained in the Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the Pedagogy of Autonomy, and some Freudian psychoanalytic concepts.
