Analysis of the Elementary and High School didactics books concerning oral health contents

Abstract

The school should offer the information about the health care. Children and teenagers have the opportunity to know, to explore, and to fix concepts with regard to the body care, including in this context the oral health. The purpose of this text is to analyze the information in the elementary and high school didactics books used by the public and private institutions in Santa Maria. A total of 48 books were analyzed, through content analysis, and the collected information was registered in a previous developed card. The subject referred to dental caries, periodontal diseases, fluoride use, cariogenic diet, and the dentist were qualified in terms of satisfaction and dissatisfaction according to scientific criteria. The results indicated that there is the predominance of the dissatisfaction criteria, mainly in what refers to the dental caries and the periodontal diseases information, whose contents can induce the wrong and incomplete knowledge. According to the results obtained by this work, it is possible to conclude that there is necessity of adequacy of the oral health didactics contents that are presented in the books adopted by public or private schools. In this sense, the dentistry should subsidize book authors and schools with information that are adequate to the scientific point of view, and it also should work beside teachers to be more useful with their students.
