Abstract

The objective of this work was to analyze the ways in which themes of life and death are approached in education. The work initially proceeded with an analysis of the National Curricular Parameters and the Curricular Proposal of Santa Catarina. Later, research was made on the textbooks adopted by the largest institution within the state education network of the mid-Valley region in Itajai, S.C., taking into account primary and middle school levels. It can be affirmed that the themes of life and death are present in both official documents and textbooks but compared with each other, more references occur to the phenomenon of life. Explicit mentioning of death is avoided and, in some cases, it is ignored or hidden. It is believed that education as a propelling incentive in the acquisition of knowledge can promote the demystification of death, preparing people early for death as well as life.
