The concept of “proportion” in Gracián’s El Criticón

This paper aims to explore, through the examn of a brief passage of the allegorical novel El Criticón, the meaning of the concept of “proportion” and the epistemological consequences of its use for Baltasar Gracián. In light of the rhetorical-poetic practices in vogue during the period of elaboration of the work (1651), it is expected to detail the technical meaning that the concept can present, revealing a radical epistemic crisis that implied a critical reassessment of the possibility of knowledge throughout the XVII century. Thus, the archaeological method aims to reevalute the central concept of “proportion” in its conection to a theory of knowledge, as presented in Crisi II of volume 1 of the Criticón, starting from contemporary rhetorical art treaties and then reflecting on the turn that the work seems to operate on the category.
