Abstract

The ipê–branco (Tabebuia roseoalba) is valued for its ornamental use, environmental recovery and silvopastoral systems. The quality of the seedlings is essential for successful cultivation and is influenced by the type of substrate used. Organic waste, such as sun coral (Tubastraea coccinea), has the potential to improve substrates, reducing costs and promoting seedling growth, as long as it is assessed for quality and toxicity. Indicators such as growth, biomass production, nutritional aspects and the Dickson quality index measure production efficiency in nurseries. The study aimed to evaluate the potential use of alternative application of sun coral as an alternative component in the substrate mixtures, aiming to partially replace conventional inputs and reduce substrate production costs in the production of ipê–branco (T. roseoalba) seedlings. For this, ipê–branco seedlings were grown with increasing doses (0, 40, 80, 160 and 320 g m–3) of sun coral added to the commercial substrate in a greenhouse for 270 days. Height, stem diameter, Dickson quality index, shoot and roots biomass production, number of leaves, leaf area, total chlorophyll, root volume, nutrient concentration and heavy metals were assessed. Sun coral application to the substrate showed potential for improving the quality and development of ipê–branco seedlings. Intermediate doses, especially 80 g m–3, stood out for their better performance in DQI, biomass, chlorophyll and root volume, favoring nutrition and photosynthesis. In contrast, high doses (≥160 g m–3) reduced biomass production and promoted nutritional imbalances due to the accumulation of heavy metals and Na+.
