Abstract

The city of Rio Branco do Sul located 28km from the capital ofParaná State, has a small number of loxoscelics accidents, however it is notknown whether it is due to a small population of the genus Loxosceles or anunderreporting of accidents. Therefore, the aim is to make a diagnosis ofthe Loxosceles populations. Anthropogenic substrates present in intra-andperidomestic habitats in the urban and rural area were inspected. Weregistered the occurrence of L. intermedia Mello-Leitão, 1934 (87%), L. laeta (Nicolet, 1849) (12.8%) and L. hirsuta Mello-Leitão, 1931 (0.02%).L. intermedia is the predominant species and responsible for an infestationof 92% of the buildings assessed. However the average number of spidersper house was small suggesting that there are some limiting factors for theinstallation and proliferation of these spiders. These factors should beconsidered to prevent the population of L. intermedia to reach the magnitudereported in Curitiba and therefore the thousands of accidents reportedin the capital of the State.
