Abstract

The aim this work of this study was to analyze the temporal and frequential distribution of rainfall in the Upper Valley of Itajaí in the state of Santa Catarina . We evaluated the results of the quantification of rain in the period 1980-2012 , using data of stations located in the region to identify extreme events . The data showed that in Rio South rainfall was approximately uniform over the analyzed period with a monthly average annual observed approximately 133.7 mm. This mean disregarding the intensity as an aggravating factor to flooding is considered normal for a month. The months of January, February and October have a payback period of less than or equal to two years, and then months that should be more alert to the probable floods. The other months have pierced the monthly average annual possess a probability of rain above average below 50 %, but the Recurrence Time or Return Period is also relatively short , being less than three years.
