In this paper, we will present the theory of context models by Teun A. Van Dijk (1977, 2004, 2012). For this linguist, context is defined as a special kind of mental model of episodic memory. In the light of a sociocognitive approach, we seek to understand how linguistic expressions of discourse are formally represented in terms of contexts. We take the position that discourse processing requires a unique cognitive device capable of elucidating even invisible signs of the text. In order both to emphasize the importance of this theory for linguistic studies and to relate it to episodic memories, we will analyze three episodes of the life of the Holocaust survivor, Dr. Primo Levi (2015), in the book Auschwitz: testimonies 1945-1986. We conclude that context as a special type of mental model comes from the episodic memory of the speaker, as Van Dijk had presupposed.
