THE MYTHS OF A LANGUAGE (UN) KNOWN

Abstract

The Portuguese language, just as the human being, evolves in the course of history, after all, there is only one language because there are speakers that keep it in use. But there is a very strong culture of the predominance of normative grammar as the only valid linguistic approach, which confuses the conception of language and induces linguistic prejudice. From this, they create myths that spread even more the prejudice, without realizing it. In this sense, this article, based on a quantitative research, had as objective to analyze the language perception that the participants have, and to verify if these myths really are part of their perceptions. To do so, a questionnaire was applied in Google Forms in which 143 participants evaluated statements that reproduce conceptions of linguistic prejudice. From the analysis of the data, it was observed that there are many concepts distorted about the Portuguese language that contribute to the propagation of the so-called linguistic prejudice.
