Authoritarianism and conformism in the tropicalist poetics

Abstract

This article is suitable for a re-reading of tropicalist poetics in its relation to the political context of that period at the end of the 1960s. suppressed civil rights. However, it stood out from the national-popular call for distancing itself from the pamphlet message. The tropicalist lyric preferred to correlate the authoritarianism of the time with the maintenance of an archaic sociability, which continued to prevail even with urban development. Thus, it took the heart of the dictatorial problem to the new reality of modernization, in which conservatism plays a relevant role as a support of the regime. Tropicalist composers carried out this proposal by resuming one of the main Brazilian literary traditions: the critique of urban background customs. We will see in the songs of Caetano Veloso and Tom Zé how this took shape.
