One of the main support points of the interpretations that affirm the relationship between Schopenhauer's thought and the romantic movement is his philosophy of music, commonly seen as a philosophical expression of the romantic musical movement. This latter connection, in turn, is usually supported by Schopenhauerian statements about the meaning of music, which would be in agreement with the conceptions of musicians and romantic music thinkers in this regard. The following text will try to approach this theme in another way: instead of considering the meaning that the philosopher attributes to music, I will try to examine the meaning he attributes to the term “music”, that is, I will ask the question about the specific type of musical art that the philosopher has in mind when reflecting on music in his writings. From this examination, I conclude that the link between Schopenhauer's musical thinking and that of romanticism is unsustainable.Downloads
