The article aims to broaden the debate regarding the feeling of remorse as a foundation for morality. It emphasizes Schopenhauer's characterization of the feeling of anguish of conscience as a sentiment that leads to self-knowledge and grounds the possibility of affirming a moral meaning for the world based on human experience. It also discusses the importance of the status of this feeling within the sphere of epistemology in order to establish it as a legitimate foundation for morality.
