The novel En Route (1895), by Joris-Karl Huysmans, portrays the spiritual journey of Durtal, a character often regarded as the author’s alter ego, toward Catholic faith, as an ascetic and reflective process, shaped by aesthetic contemplation of medieval artistic expressions, monastic reclusion in a Trappist abbey, and the gradual adherence to an ethic of renunciation and penitence. At a certain point in the narrative, Huysmans, through Durtal’s voice, explicitly acknowledges the presence of Arthur Schopenhauer’s philosophy, a thinker to whom he had previously been strongly drawn. Taking this acknowledgment as its point of departure, this essay investigates the extent to which central elements of Schopenhauerian philosophy, particularly his ethics, metaphysics of beauty, and the doctrine of the negation of the will, are present in Huysmans’s work.
