Abstract

In the text On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason (1847), Schopenhauer asserts that each concept is formed by dropping a good deal of what is given us in perception, retaining only what is common to various representations. Thus, he considers that the concept is a “thinking-less” [Wenigerdenken] than what is perceived [angeschaut]. My hypothesis is that the Idea, in contrast to concepts, can be understood as a “thinking-more” [Mehrdenken], because the knowledge of the Idea has the ability to expand what is empirically intuited, reaching the intuition of a totality that comes from a thinking sensibly fixed through pictures of the fantasy.
