At least since the 19th century, the relationship between pessimism and politics has sparked debate among several philosophers, whose readings have pointed to quite opposite understandings. On the one hand, there is the traditional reading, which brings Schopenhauer, the founder of modern pessimism, closer to a conservative political conception, as is the case with the criticisms made by Lukács. On the other hand, there is a critical appropriation, on the part of a so-called “schopenhauerian left”, of aspects of this pessimism, as Mainländer, Lütkehaus, Horkheimer and the School of Critical Theory. In this article, we seek to analyze some categories of Schopenhauer's political, social and economic thought and the different readings of his philosophy.
