This paper highlights how Bahnsen’s Beiträge zur Charakterologie (1867) represent a first interpretative filter for Nietzsche’s reception of some essential themes of Schopenhauer’s philosophy. The young Nietzsche shares not only Bahnsen’s critique of Schopenhauer’s radical dualism between will and intellect but also the thesis that intellectual inclinations derive from the individual character’s peculiarity. Bahnsen’s critical remarks on Schopenhauer’s doctrine of character represent the interpretive key by which Nietzsche explains his adherence to Schopenhauer’s philosophy. From Nietzsche’s perspective, his affinity with Schopenhauer is tangible proof of a character incapable of satisfying his metaphysical needs through recourse to religion. Nietzsche also agrees with Bahnsen that excessive self-reflection inhibits action and the authentic expression of individual character and, consequently, that the voice of instinct is preferable to the guidance of the intellect.
