Paths of sociological research and experiences of class

The present article, based on the discussion about research paths, reflects on the dilemmas involving academic, gender, and class experiences. The text presents efforts for a critical understanding of investigative paths and methodological traditions. From a master's research with women in the fruit and vegetable canning industry, which studied the processes of productive restructuring in the city of Pelotas/RS, to a doctoral research with men working in automotive services in the city of Porto Alegre/RS, which discussed the dramas involving the old and new identity shapes of a profession, both studies addressed the impacts of labor changes and the comprehensive challenges posed to the sociology of work. Considering the narratives and memories, the aim was to understand the universe of meanings of the "lowly ones", the conflicts and social contradictions.
