Literacy Interventions as Rehabilitation Strategies for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review

Abstract

This study systematically reviewed pedagogical and technological approaches to literacy in students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with a focus on functional outcomes framed within a biopsychosocial rehabilitation model. Rehabilitation was operationalized as support for functional communication, literacy autonomy, and social participation, rather than solely as clinical remediation. The systematic review was conducted using the Methodi Ordinatio methodology and followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Articles published between 2019 and 2025 in SciELO, Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct were retrieved. Studies were ranked using the InOrdinatio index, and those scoring >90 were included in the final synthesis. The final synthesis analyzed 23 studies. Findings clustered into three themes: (i) reading and comprehension skills, where letter recognition is often preserved but difficulties persist in vocabulary, phonological awareness, and comprehension; (ii) pedagogical mediation practices, especially shared reading, which improve joint attention and functional communication; and (iii) digital and assistive technologies, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools, which support functional literacy even for nonspeaking students. The review shows that literacy interventions for students with ASD contribute to academic performance and to rehabilitation-oriented outcomes when they expand communication, autonomy, and social participation. It also indicates that expanded research in underrepresented regions is essential to ensure culturally responsive and equitable practices.
