This article was developed within the Research Group on Body, Education, and Culture, linked to the Graduate Program in Education at the Federal University of Mato Grosso, under the research line Social Movements, Politics, and Popular Education. The study aims to understand play as a formative space that expresses the lived reality of children on the Brazil–Bolivia border, at Maria Gregória Ortiz Cardos Municipal School, seeking to identify and describe the social practices of play among students in the early years of elementary education in Porto Esperidião – MT. It is characterized as a participatory research, conducted through the analysis of everyday school life and children’s experiences, based on school ethnography and in dialogue with studies on ethnic–racial relations, within the context of Chiquitano history and culture, evidenced by the presence of these Indigenous peoples in this border region. In this sense, the research seeks to understand play through the recognition of its social practices, meanings, and significance in the social formation of children living in the urban area of Porto Esperidião – Mato Grosso. The study is grounded in the dialogue between cultures and education, from an intercultural perspective, and guided by a decolonial approach in a school located on the Brazil–Bolivia border.
