The assistant role at the Maternity Ward

Objective: This is an explorative, descriptive and qualitative research carried out at the Maternity Ward of theAcademicMedicalCenterof the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, from August to November of 2010 with the aim of observing the engagement and the role of the ward assistants at such a facility. 32 individuals have participated in it. From the analysis of the data found by observing the participants, six categories have been constituted: a) The role of the ward assistants by the time of pregnant woman is admitted and discharged; b) Receive and provide information: the communicational complexity at the facility; c) The difficult and consternated role of such a coadjutant at taking care of the newborn; d) The essential assistance at taking care of the puerpera; e) The solidarity towards other families; and f) Between the watch and sleep time. The conclusion is that the engagement of the ward assistants remains barely sufficient despite the practical and emotional support they provide to the puerperas.
